In a forced removal policy then headed by 16th US President (1861-1865) Abraham Lincoln, under orders by US Army Major General James H. Carleton, and under the operational command of US Army Colonel Christopher H. (“Kit”) Carson, the Navajo People were forcibly removed and relocated by the US Army in 1864, in a forced migration known as the Long Walk of the Navajo.

In that Long Walk, more than 8,000 men, women, and children were forced to abandon their ancestral homelands and walk more than 500 km (300 miles) at gunpoint during an 18-day journey to a US Army concentration camp at Bosque Redonto, by the Pecos River (a remote and desolate area in the eastern portion of the territory under present-day occupation of the US state of New Mexico).

More than 300 Navajo men, women, and children died during that Long Walk. At the Bosque Redonto concentration camp between 1863 and 1868, the US Army imprisoned and persecuted about 10,000 Navajo and Apache (95% Navajo) people. More than 3,500 men, women, and children died from starvation and disease during their captivity at that concentration camp.
