To the contemporary People
and the coming generations of the People
of the
Continent of the Western Hemisphere
[called “America“, “the Americas” (European naming)]

the People of many tribes,
of all origins, all colors, and all cultures:

You were once many distinct peoples
of the human race.

You are destined to become One People

the “People of the Rainbow”,
of all origins, all colors, and cultures.

“…People from all of ‘the Americas’ will unite
with people from all the other nations,
and they will realize that
we are all Family, brothers and sisters…”

Don Alejandro Cirilo Perez,
Maya Elders Council, Guatemala
(Prophecy of the Whirling Rainbow,
source 3)

A few centuries ago, the name “America” was imposed upon the ‘Continent of the Western Hemisphere’ (the ‘Western Continent’) by empires and their colonies from the western subregion of the main Continent of the Eastern Hemisphere [the subregion called “Europe” of the Continent called “Afro-Eurasia” (European namings)].

During this time:

The Western Continent was being aggressively occupied, genocide was being committed against Indigenous Peoples of the Western Continent, and forced migrant peoples of origin from the southern subcontinent of the Eastern Continent [the subcontinent called “Africa” (European naming)] were being enslaved in the Western Continent — under imperialist/colonialist/white-supremacist European domination. (sources 1, 2)

Considering the largely tragic 500-year history of the Western Continent during the period beginning with the initial arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492 and throughout the 16th through 20th centuries under imperialist/colonialist/white-supremacist European domination, any naming of the Western Continent by the 16th through 20th century European authorities is without collective democratic legitimacy.

Also, the name “America” has become confused with the nation-state “United States of America”.

Therefore: I  propose  that, someday, in the time ahead, the whole human community of the Western Continent — as a multicultural Continental community united-in-diversity — will collectively and  democratically choose a new conventional name for the Continent, to replace the colonialist European name “America” (synonymously, “the Americas”, the contemporary international conventional term).

And I propose that, to express respect for this great land of our Planet and for all the peoples who have lived or will live upon this land,  the new name that will be collectively chosen for the Continent be an Indigenous name.

Because: Indigenous Peoples inhabited this Continent for about 20,000 years before becoming subjected to imperialist/colonialist/white-supremacist European physical,  biological, and cultural genocide and crimes against humanity (according to contemporary international definitions of these crimes) during the 500-year period following the initial arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492.

To the contemporary People
and the coming generations of the People
of this Planet, our Mother Planet

the People of many tribes,
of all origins, all colors, and all cultures.

You were once many distinct peoples
of the human race.

You are destined to become One People

the “People of the Rainbow”,
of all origins, all colors, and cultures.

I propose that, someday, in the time ahead, the whole human community of our Planet — as a multicultural  worldwide community united-in-diversity — will collectively and democratically choose a specific and shared name for our specific and shared Planet.

Also, I propose that the human community of our Planet will choose new names for the geological continents, subcontinents, continental subregions, local regions, mountains, oceans,  lakes, rivers, etc., of our Planet — new names, not imposed by the force of one group of peoples upon another, not stained by the spilled blood of history.

(a prophecy of the Indigenous Peoples of the Western Continent,
which has been expressed in various forms)

Prophecy as told by Lee Brown of the Cherokee Nation,
1986 Baha’i Continental Indigenous Council
(transcript of full speech):

“At the beginning of this cycle of time, long ago,
the Great Spirit came down, and He made an appearance;
and He gathered the peoples of this Earth together,
they say on an island which is now beneath the water.
And He said to the human beings:
‘I’m going to send you to four directions,
and over time I’m going to change you to four colors.
But I’m going to give you some teachings,
and you will call these the Original Teachings.
And when you come back together with each other,
you will share these so that you can live and have peace on Earth;
and a great civilization will come about.'”

Navajo/Hopi Prophecy of the Whirling Rainbow
(source 3):

“There will come a day when people of all races, colors, and creeds will put aside their differences. They will come together in love, joining hands in unification, to heal the Earth and all Her children. They will move over the Earth like a great Whirling Rainbow, bringing peace, understanding, and healing everywhere they go…

The whole human race will be called ‘The People’, and there will be no more war, sickness, or hunger, forever…”
