The Panama Canal (Spanish: Canal de Panamá), in use since 1914, is an artificial 77-kilometer (48 mile) waterway in the territory under the present-day jurisdiction of the state of Panama that connects the western ocean of the Western Hemisphere [the ocean called the “Pacific Ocean” (European naming)] with the eastern ocean of the Western Hemisphere [the ocean called the “Atlantic Ocean” (European naming)].

The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a key conduit for international sea trade.

In 1903, the United States Government, under 26th US President (1901-1909) Theodore Roosevelt, intervened militarily and took control of the region of “Panama”, located in central isthmian region of the Continent of  the Western Hemisphere [the Continent called “the Americas” (European naming)].

At the time, the region of Panama was part of the territory under the jurisdiction of the state of Colombia. The main purpose of the US seizure of Panama from Colombia was for the United States to take full control of the Panama Canal Zone, build the Panama Canal (according to its own terms), and retain possession of the Panama Canal.

US President Roosevelt sent in the US warship Nashville. US soldiers landed, declared the “independent state” of Panama, and supported the installation of a US satellite (puppet) government.

Immediately following, the US Government took full control of the Panama Canal Zone (a full control the US Government retained until the year 2000).

With full control of the Panama Canal Zone, the United States constructed the Panama Canal (constructed during 1904-1914, formally opened on 15 August 1914).
